A Kaziranga safari begins at 5:30am. The sky is dark, the temperature is low, and the jeep — open-sided — will move at speed through air that is colder than you expected. By 8:00am, the light is golden and the wildlife is moving. By noon, you're back at Irroi Kaziranga and it's warm enough to swim. If you haven't decided when to come yet, read our guide to rhino season and the Kohora Range first. This guide focuses purely on what to pack once you have.
This guide is written from experience. It covers what works in the Kohora Range across different months of the season — from the warm days of November to the genuinely cold mornings of January.
Clothing: The Layering System
The single most important packing principle for a Kaziranga safari is layering. You will start cold, warm up, and by afternoon the temperature may have swung 15 degrees. Pack for the 5:30am departure, not the afternoon by the pool.
Colours
Earth tones only on safari: khaki, olive, tan, warm brown, dark green, slate grey. Bright colours and white are visible to wildlife at distance and detract from other guests' experiences. Most importantly, they detract from yours — there is something about dressing for the landscape that shifts your attention to it.
Off-safari, wear what you like. The lodge has no dress code.
The Core Kit (Months Varying)
November–December:
- Light long-sleeved base layer (merino or moisture-wicking synthetic) — worn on morning drives
- Fleece or light down jacket — the jeep wind makes 16°C feel colder
- Light cotton shirt or linen for afternoon and evening
- One pair of sturdy trousers (not denim — too heavy when damp)
- One pair of lightweight shorts or second trousers
January–February (peak season):
- Thermal base layer — mornings can reach 8°C and the open jeep intensifies it
- Fleece mid-layer
- Light down or padded jacket as outer layer
- Buff or neck gaiter — essential for cold mornings
- Light gloves — optional but useful in January
March–April:
- Light long-sleeved shirt only — mornings are mild (16–20°C)
- Light cotton or linen for the rest of the day
- Sunscreen and a brimmed hat — the March sun is strong
"The most common packing mistake at Kaziranga is under-preparing for the morning and over-packing for the afternoon. The cold is the variable. The heat takes care of itself."
Footwear
Closed-toe shoes with ankle support for the jeep — you may step out briefly in some zones. Comfortable sandals or flip-flops for the lodge. If you plan to do a walking section near the Baari or any village walk, a pair of lightweight trail shoes or hiking sandals is useful but not essential.
Do not bring heels or formal footwear. The lodge grounds are garden paths, not marble corridors.
Camera Equipment
This is the section most guests spend the most time on. The short version: long and fast, braced for a moving jeep, with backup power for cold mornings.
- Telephoto lens: 300–500mm minimum. Rhinos are most often 30–80m from the vehicle; a 200mm lens will give you documentation images but not the photographs you want. A 100–400mm zoom is the most versatile choice.
- Aperture: A fast lens (f/4 or f/5.6 maximum aperture) is more valuable than extreme reach in low dawn light. f/6.3 will require ISO compensation that degrades image quality.
- Stabilisation: A monopod or folded jacket as a beanbag across the jeep rail is more practical than a tripod. Image stabilisation on the lens is essential.
- Batteries: Bring two fully charged batteries minimum. Cold mornings drain them faster than summer shooting, and you will not want to stop shooting at 6:15am because your battery died.
- Memory cards: Bring more than you think you need. The Brahmaputra floodplain at dawn, an elephant herd emerging from the grass, a rhino at thirty metres, the improbable gold of a golden tabby tiger moving through pale grass — you will not want to be managing storage on the jeep.
What to Leave Behind
- Strong perfume or cologne. Wildlife can detect scent from considerable distance. Keep fragrance for the evening.
- White or very bright clothing for the jeep.
- Heavy luggage. The lodge is a 4–5 hour drive from Guwahati airport, or 2 hours from Jorhat. Overpacking makes every car, boat, and transfer more difficult. Pack light — the rooms at Irroi Kaziranga have everything you need.
- Expectations about Wi-Fi. Connectivity in the Kohora Range is variable. This is an asset, not a failing.
